Opening Day of Maple Sugar Season at HHNM!

It’s opening day! Come celebrate the beginning of maple sugar season and visit our Sugar Shacks!

In addition to our regular award winning Maple Sugar Tours (see details below) you’ll get to enjoy:

  • Special crafts, games, and story telling around the camp fire

  • Treats of the sweet season

  • Fun recipes for maple syrup

As winter ends, it’s maple sugaring time! Visit us to see, learn, and, most importantly, TASTE! Learn how to identify and tap sugar maple trees, discover sugaring techniques used by Native Americans, pioneers, and modern-day farmers, see an evaporator in action, and finish by participating in our taste test challenge to see if you can tell the difference between maple-flavored syrup and the real thing.

Sugar Bush Tours: 11am, 1pm & 2pm; a one mile moderate hike through field and forest to the Sugar Bush Shack (terrain and weather conditions dependent)

Maple Lane Tours: 12pm & 3pm; perfect for little legs, a short walk from the Visitor Center to our Maple Lane Sugar Shack after a tour of the sugar maple stand

This opportunity is designed for people who are beginners, interested in trying snowshoeing as a new winter activity. Each session will be run by a Sam’s Point employee who will provide instruction on how to properly wear and adjust the snowshoes, as well as work with you until you are ready to head out on your favorite trail with confidence. The lesson may last up to one hour. Snowshoes are available to rent for this program at a discounted rate of $5 per person at the Sam’s Point Visitor Center.

This is a beginner level group clinic that works on footwork, conditioning, defensive moves, punches using the heavy bag, speed bag and focus mitts. Students must wear boxing gloves and wraps. Students should provide their own gloves.

Re-live the life highlights of legendary abolitionist Sojourner Truth as we acknowledge parts of her life including her escape route to freedom. This walk will include brief pit stops with readings along the way and will end with a live in-person reenactment of her famous “Ain’t I A Woman” speech by Deborah Zuill.

Following Zuills speech will be an artists’ presentation by Meredith Bergmann and Vinnie Bagwell. Each of these talented sculptors have been commissioned to create larger-than-life sculptures of Sojourner Truth. Ms. Bergmann’s statue will be installed in Central Park and Ms. Bagwell’s statue will be at the entrance to Walkway Over the Hudson in Highland. They will be on hand to give a slide presentation and talk about their research into Sojourner Truth’s life, their monumental artworks, and the power of art to tell our stories.

This is event is made possible by various groups including Scenic Hudson, Kingston Midtown Rising, Midtown Arts District (MAD), The Old Dutch Church, Seasoned Gives, Harambee, Metal House Cider and MyKingstonKids.

Special thx to Ulster County, The City of Kingston, and Town of Esopus.

Free bus will be available at Dietz Stadium for pick-up & drop off. The bus will take individuals to the starting point in Port Ewen. For disabled and seniors the trolley will be available for you to ride back. Pick up time is 11:00AM sharp!

Stony Kill maintains a working farm housing chickens, cows, pigs, and sheep.  The daily care of the farm animals is done by our Livestock Caretakers.  Each weekend our barn guides give tours to the visiting public.

The Barn is open every Saturday and Sunday, from the beginning of February to the end November with the exception of days on which special events are held and holidays.
