An event every week that begins at 4:30pm on Monday, repeating until February 25, 2019
The Jefferson Valley Mall is proud to announce our weekly after school science program, Science At The Mall, From The Land To The Sea!
This 11 week program will inspire children about the wonders of our planet. Through hands on activities and real artifacts children will learn about the wonders of the earth. Classes will take place on Mondays from 4:30 – 5:30 and are best suited for students in grades K – 5.
Week 1 – 10/22/18 – Long Island Sound Day: Stations will be set up, different artifacts and specimens from Long Island Sound will available for students to explore and make scientific observations.
Week 2 – 10/29/18 – Sounds Fishy!: In this program, kids will learn about different fish and make observations of real fish.
Week 3 – 11/5/18 – Marine world of the Docks: In this program, kids will have a fun hands-on experience of being young Marine Biologists and look at different organisms from the docks of long island sound with the use of microscopes.
Week 4 – 11/19/18 – Earth Science Day: We Bring The Museum To You! Stations will be set up, different specimens and minerals will be set up on tables for students to explore, make and record scientific observations.
Week 5 – 11/26/18 – Geology: Got Rocks? It’s not a Rock, it’s a Mineral! : In this hands-on program, we bring real mineral specimens that kids will touch, observe, weigh, measure and learn to identify them. They will experience the fun in mining out their own collection and take it home to extend learning.
Week 6 – 1/7/19 – Dive with the sharks: Have you ever wondered what its like to scuba dive with the shark? In this program, we will share our scuba diving experience and videos, with sharks on coral reefs.
Week 7 – 1/14/19 – Coral reefs: Stations will be set up, different artifacts from the coral reefs, will be set up on tables for students to explore and make scientific observations.
Week 8 – 1/28/19 – Archaeology Adventure: In this program, kids will have a fun hands-on experience of being young archaeologist. They will participate in a simulated dig site discover and learn the rich culture of early Native Americans.
Week 9 – 2/4/19 – Magnificent Mollusks!: In this program kids will learn about different Mollusks and get to look at the outside and insides of a squid.
Week 10 – 2/11/19 – Bones in a box: In this program, kids become young paleontologists! Each kid will put part of a dinosaur skeleton together, and take it home to extend learning. They will also be able to touch real fossils and dinosaur bone replicas.
Week 11 – 2/25/19 – Fossil Hunting: In this program, kids will have fun and learn digging dirt like a real paleonthologist. They will also be able to touch, observe, weigh, measure and learn to identify fossils.
